Introduction
About Business Continuity Management
Incidents, which are intentionally or unintentionally caused, have clearly demonstrated that neither public nor private sectors are immune from its devastating effects.
Specifically, incidents such as technology-related accidents, natural and environmental disasters, and acts-of-terror, require organizational resilience. Such resilience translates that a business is proactive enough to avoid disruption of critical operations and services.
But how does a business manage and survive incidents and take appropriate actions to ensure its continued viability?
Managing Business Continuity
The essence of business continuity guarantees that uninterrupted availability of all key resources required to support essential business operations and services.
A Business Continuity Management System (BCMS) helps organizations put structures in place to identify potential threats and impact of incidents. BCMS also provides organizations a structured framework, which includes developing strategies and methods aimed at reducing the impact of any incident; build capability to effectively respond should an incident occur; and consequently, guard the business from further threats.
The British Standard (BS) 25999 is currently the leading business continuity standard that provides a basis for understanding, developing and implementing business continuity within the organization. It also contains a comprehensive set of requirements based on BCM best practices and covers the whole BCM lifecycle.
