69th Commemoration of the Araw ng Kagitingan and Philippine Veterans Week

Pursuant to Executive Order No. 203, s. 1987, declaring April 9 of every year as Araw ng Kagitingan and Presidential Proclamation No. 466, s. 1989 declaring the period of April 5-11 of every year as Philippine Veterans Week, all government agencies including government-owned and controlled corporations, non-government organizations, private associations and institutions, and individuals are enjoined to assist, cooperate, and participate in this historic commemoration. The commemoration aims to promote and preserve the principles, ideals and deeds of the war veterans as a means to enhance patriotism and love of country, especially among the youth.

The Department of Education (DepEd), being a member of the Multi-Agency Task Force (MATF), encourages all regional, division and school officials to attend and participate in all the activities lined-up for this year's celebration.

One of the highlights of the commemoration is the conduct of the following competitions by DepEd in coordination with the Department of National Defense (DND) through the MATF:

• 3rd Guhit ng Kabayanihan (Creative Painting Contest) - This is open to high school students enrolled in public and private secondary schools nationwide. Deadline for the submission of entries is on March 28, 2011.
• 2nd National Essay Writing Competition - This is open to all high school students nationwide. Deadline for the submission of entries is on March 28, 2011.

The judging of the different competitions will be held on March 30, 2011 at the Bulwagan ng Karungungan, DepEd Complex, Meralco Avenue, Pasig City.

The Araw ng Kagitingan commemorative rites will be replicated in different areas. The DepEd Regional Director and the Schools Division/City Superintendent shall represent the Secretary and shall ensure the attendance of the regional, division, and school officials, teachers, and students during the conduct of said occassion in the following areas:

a.    Region I - Batac, Ilocos Norte;
b.    Region II - Province of Isabela;
c.    Region IV - City of Tagaytay;
d.    Region V - Province of Albay;
e.    Region VI - Iloilo City;
f.     Region VII - Cebu City;
g.    Region VIII - Province of Leyte;
h.    Region IX - Zamboanga City;
i.     Region XII - Cotabato City; J• Caraga - Butuan City;
k.    CAR - Baguio City; and
1.   ARMM - Iligan City.
 
Travel expenses (transportation and per diem) of the winners and coaches or teacher chaperones shall be charged to local funds while board and lodging of the winners and their coaches or chaperones, cash prizes, medals, and trophies shall be charged to the MATF Funds. Expenses for the supplies and materials, meals and snacks, documentation and communication, TEVs and Honoraria of the Judges and Task Force, and other miscellaneous and operational expenses shall be charged to OSEC funds subject to the usual accounting and auditing rules and regulations.
