How to Make a Dengue-Carrying Mosquitoes [Ovicidal/Larvicidal (OL)] Trap System in the Philippines

Disease-carrying mosquitoes in particular the Aedes Aegypti, the primary carrier of dengue virus, have been a perennial health problem in many tropical countries like the Philippines. Death toll from dengue has increasing in alarming rates among children and adults over the last few years. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) in cooperation with Philippine Research Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) has come up with a sound technology innovation capable of efficiently reducing the population of Aedes mosquitoe carrying the dengue.

The DOST technology innovation both serves as an attractant in ovicidal/larvicidal agent. It contains a plant-based organic solution containing active ingredients that attract the Aedes mosquito to lay their eggs where they are eventually killed at either the egg or larva stage.

The experiment at DOST used a small black container or tin can containing the organic solution and a lawanit paddle serving as an entrapment called the ovicidal/larvicidal trap or simply OL trap.

The idea is to attract mosquitoes particularly the Aedes Aegypti to lay their eggs on the lawanit paddle. The trap creates optimum conditions for the species to lay its eggs. Stagnant, clean, clear water, dark area and deep rough surface. The eggs will either be trapped in the lawanit paddle or find its way into organic solution where they are killed before transforming into adults.

For communities that are prone to dengue disease and would like to set-up their own ovicidal/larvicidal (OL) trap in places where mosquitoes usually breed, here is a simple way to create them.

Materials
needed would be the following:
  • a black painted can or black plastic cup

  • ovicidal/larvicidal (OL) pellets

  • a small lawanit paddle (1 inch x 6.5 inches)

  • 250mL of water
250mL water
  • used toothbrush

The DOST-ITDI has the all trap kit which includes the mentioned items. Tap water has to be provided at the household.

Procedures on How to Make Your Own Dengue-Carrying Mosquitoes or Ovicidal/Larvicidal (OL) Trap System

1. Pour 250mL tap water into the black plastic cup until the lined mark above the printed DOST logo.

2. Pour one (1) pack of OL pellets into the plastic cup.

3. Saturate the lawanit paddle with the solution by dipping it into the container with the rough surface of lawanit exposed or facing up.
The lawanit is ideal because of its high absorbency and the rough surface makes it easier for mosquito eggs to adhere to it.
4. The cup should be placed inside and outside the house in a low-lying area.
If placed outside, it should be protected from the sun and rainfall. Be careful not to spill the contents of the cup and keep out of reach of children and animals.

5. The OL trap should remain for 6 to 7 days.
After 6 or 7 days, mosquitoes found to be adhering to the lawanit paddle should be brushed up into the solution an old used toothbrush. Ensure that the mosquito eggs fall directly into the solution while brushing.

All liquid contents of the cup may then be disposed on dry ground.
This whole procedure will be repeated weekly.
