World AIDS Day 2011 Celebration

The annual commemoration of the World Aids Day (WAD) will once again take place
on December 1, 2011. Observed worldwide, this occasion serves as a platform for raising greater public awareness on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), honoring those who have died of AIDS, and enjoining the national leaders to become active participants in putting together and carrying out an effective country response to this health condition.
This year's theme, "Getting to Zero," reflects the vision of the Philippine National
AIDS Council (PNAC), the country's leading policymaking and advisory agency on HIV and AIDS, of bringing HIV infections to a halt by 2016 as well as achieving zero incidence in AIDS-related deaths and discrimination against persons with HIV.

As the number of HIV infections has grown to an average of six (6) cases per day as
of this year, efforts to disseminate knowledge on HIV and AIDS to a wider audience and call on more sectors to join the campaign to halt HIV and AIDS have become especially urgent.

For the above reasons, everyone is enjoined to participate in the following suggested
activities during the aforementioned date:
  1. Putting up of bulletin board displays in strategic places, giving emphasis on the theme;
  2. a highlighting of the significance of the commemoration during the flag ceremony;
  3. conduct of symposia and panel discussions, film showing, among others on HIV and AIDS prevention and control; and
  4. integration of HIV and AIDS education in appropriate learning areas.
The regional directors (RDs) and schools division/city superintendents (SDSs) shall designate school health personnel to take the lead in the coordination of the aforementioned activities. A report on the activities to be conducted shall be included in the 4th quarter report on the school health program to be submitted to the Office of the Secretary, Attention: School Health and Nutrition Center (HNC), DepEd Complex, Meralco Avenue, Pasig City.

Please refer to the enclosed primer prepared for this occasion by the PNAC Secretariat, which can be reached at telephone no.: (02) 651-7800 local 2550 and 2551; telefax no.: (02) 743-0512; or send the Secretariat a message through e-mail address: secretariat@pnac.org.ph or pnacsec@yahoo.com.
