Teachers' Scholarship for the Graduate Certificate in Cultural Education Summer 2011

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd), will conduct the first phase of the Teachers' Scholarship for the Graduate Certificate in Cultural Education Summer 2011, a post-baccalaureate in-service teacher enhancement program in six (6) Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) nationwide.
The 24-unit graduate program is a ladderized curriculum designed to expand the teacher-participants' knowledge based on Philippine history, culture, heritage and the arts, and their application to culture-based teaching of basic education. The first phase consisting of twelve (12) graduate-level academic credits will start in Summer 2011 while the remaining twelve (12) units will be offered in Summer 2012. The successful graduates of this program have the option to continue on to the Master of Education, Major in Cultural Education.

The target participants are public elementary and secondary school teachers of any subject-area. The following are the accredited HEI-conduits and venues:
 
Bicol University (BU) - Legazpi City
Bulacan State University (BSU) - Malolos City
Isabela State University (ISU) - Echague, Isabela
Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) - Calamba City
Cebu Normal University (CNU) - Cebu City
La Salle University (LSU) - Ozamis City

The NCCA shall provide scholarship subsidy consisting of full tuition and registration, workshop kits and materials, and a Five Thousand Pesos (PhP5,000.00) stipend to cover meals, accommodations and other sundry expenses. Transportation to and from the venue shall be the participants' responsibility which may be charged to local funds.

Program Information

Description and Objectives

The program is a two-summer 24-unit post-baccalaureate program divided into Certificate Program in Cultural Education Levels I and II. It offers foundation and major courses to enhance the students' understanding of the basic theories, processes and applications of arts, culture, heritage in the culture-based teaching of the basic education curriculum.

Following are its objectives:
  1. To expand the teacher-participants' knowledge base in Philippine history, culture, heritage and the arts;
  2. To provide the teacher-participants with hands-on opportunities for critical dialogue with the local culture and arts;
  3. To help the teacher-participants develop knowledge structures, framework and information systems that integrate history, culture, heritage and the arts into the formal curriculum of basic education; and
  4. To build the teacher-participants' capability to contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the local history, culture, heritage and the arts in the context of contemporary Philippine realities .
Students shall undergo the following ladder-type curriculum:

CulEd 208 - Development of Culture-Based Lesson Exemplars

Successful graduates of the 24-unit Certificate Program have the option to pursue the Master of Education (MAEd) Major in Cultural Education or Master in Cultural Education program, on scholarship basis, to be offered by Teacher Education Institutions selected by the NCCA

 
Scholarship Eligibility Provisions
Target participants are basic education public school teachers of any subject-area who meet the following eligibility requirements:
  1. 23 - 45 years old with good moral character;
  2. Bachelor degree holder with general weighted average of 85% or equivalent;
  3. At least 3 years teaching experience with permanent appointment in any or a combination of academic subjects in a public elementary or high school;
  4. LET-passer; and
  5. Endorsed by the principal, district supervisor; division education supervisor or division superintendent (any one of the above).
Interested participants should submit the following documentation requirements:
  1. Duly accomplished nomination form signed by recognized authority
  2. Duly accomplished registration form signed by the teacher-applicant;
  3. NSO-certified birth certificate or copy of passport page showing citizenship and age;
  4. Copy of LET results or certification; and
  5. Endorsement and certification letter from any recognized authority (see table above)
