2012 Annual Nationwide Search for Young Art Scholars (ANSYAS) of the Philippine High School for the Arts

The Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA), a government-run special secondary school for young artists, is now accepting applications for full scholarship to a special secondary education. The PHSA conducts screening of applicants annually to continuously search for artistically talented children who will be given special training in the following fields: (a) ballet and folk dance, (b) creative writing, (c) music, (d) theater, and (e) visual arts. The school's program is intended to ensure continuing source of artists of excellence and leaders in the preservation and promotion of Filipino artistic and cultural traditions.
The successful applicants will be awarded free tuition, textbooks, board and lodging, a modest monthly stipend, individualized classes with master teachers, and a chance to represent the country in international competitions and exchange programs. The scholarship grant is renewable every year upon satisfaction of both academic and non-academic requirements.

Applicants must be Filipino citizens who can meet the following requirements:
  1. outstanding ability in dance (folk dance or ballet), music (instrument and voice);
  2. graduating Grade VI or VII pupils this School Year (SY) 2011-2012;
  3. proficient in oral and written language (English and Filipino);
  4. good health condition;
  5. willing to study in a boarding school;
  6. determined to pursue a college degree in fine arts or architecture, music, dance, theater, creative writing, journalism or any related courses upon graduation from PHSA; and
  7. not more than 14 years old.
Interested applicants may directly send their accomplished application forms and other requirements by mail or by personally submitting them to the Annual Nationwide Search for Young Art Scholars Committee, Philippine High School for the Arts, National Arts Center, Mt. Makiling, College 4031, Laguna. The PHSA Scholarship Application Form is enclosed.

Applicants who qualify in the preliminary evaluation wi11 be notified by the PHSA for further assessment and live audition at a specified Regional Test and Audition Center. The PHSA will announce the exact location of the audition centers by mail.

Travel and other incidental expenses incurred by the pupils and their mentors shall be charged to local funds subject to the usual accounting and auditing rules and regulations.

Selection Procedure

To be qualified for live adjudication of artistic ability, an applicant must be able to demonstrate the following:

Creative Writing - proficiency in at least three (3) literary genres (e.g. poetry, short story, playwriiting); excellent command of English and Filipino; wide vocabulary. Must be ready for the on-the-spot writing exercises.

Submit a neatly presented portfolio (size: A4 folder) of not less than ten (10) samples of work written (if any genres - e.g. short story, poem, essay and/or play) in Filipino and/or English, computer encoded, double-spaced on size A4, white bond paper; each must be authenticated by the school principal or teacher-in-charge with the full name of the applicant and full name and address of the school must be written on the front cover of the portfolio.

Name at least ten (10) Filipino and/or Foreign writers and list down at least five (5) of each of their literary works. Write a brief profile of the authors/ writers with a short analysis of their literary works, then explain further how these authors and their literary works influence them to becoming creative writers.

Dance (Philippine Folk) - energy and perseverance in learning new steps; well proportioned, flexible yet strong and agile body; ability to imitate kinesthetic patterns in detail and quickly memorize movement patters; sensitivity to harmony, rhythm and melody.

Dance (Ballet) - energy and perseverance in learning new steps; well proportioned, flexible yet strong and agile body; ability to imitate kinesthetic patterns in detail and can quickly memorize movement patterns; sensitivity to harmony, rhythm and melody; female applicants must have at least three (3) consecutive years of training in classical and or modem dance and can execute one (1) classical or neoclassical or modern dance piece while male applicants must have at least one year of basic training in ballet or modern dance and can execute one (1) classical or neoclassical or modern dance piece.

Theater Arts
- high degree of self confidence, spontaneity and imaginativeness; a good speaking and singing voice; an analytical mind and agile body for dance and interpretative movement; ability to creatively execute given instructions; performance of a fully rehearsed and memorized oral interpretation piece in Filipino (e.g. monologue, storytelling; declamation)

Visual Arts - advanced drawing ability, speed and control in performing a task; understanding of various media; skill in representation.

MUSIC - Video-taped audition

Music (Voice) applicants

Open to females only - A videotaped performance containing the following: From memory, perform two (2) contrasting songs, perform one (1) Italian or any foreign song, and one (1) kundiman (eg. Abelardo, Santiago, San Pedro), or any Filipino classical song; can sight read; sensitivity to pitch and rhythm; general musicianship. Prepare for a live performance on the day of the audition. The videotaped inside any enclosed venue which is free from unwanted sounds; a recording that has undergone electronic mixing or enhancements will not be accepted; in the video recording, the applicant must state the following introduction before the performances - full name and address of the school; the scores of repertoire performed (shoving the complete title and name of composer according to the order of performance) must be included in the submission; the videotaped performances must be bumed on CD in a format that can be easily viewed; the pieces can be sung in a capela or with accompaniment.

Music (Piano) applicants

A videotaped performance containing the following: from memory, perform scales and arpeggios in at least three (3) octaves; one (1) etude (choose from among the following: Carl Czerny School of Velocity Opus 299, Carl Czerny School of Velocity Opus 740, Johann Baptist Cramer Short Studies Opus 100, Ignaz Moschelle's Etudes or Moritz Moszkowski 15 Etudes of Velocity Opus 70); [a] one (1) Johann Sebastian Bach's Two or Three-Part Invention or Well-Tempered Clavier Band I or II (Prelude and Fugue); [b] one (1) complete Sonatina by Clementi, Kuhlau, or Dussek or one (1) complete Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven; [c] one (1) romantic piece by Schumann, Schubert, Chopin, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, or Mendelsohnn; [d] one (1) piece by a Filipino composer; [e] one (1) contemporary piece by Debussy, Bartok, Prokofieff, de Falla, or Ravel; the performances must be videotaped inside any enclosed venue which is free from unwanted sounds; the video camera and the microphone must be 6 to 7 meters away from the applicant; a recording that has undergone electronic mixing or enhancements will not be accepted; the scores of repertoire performed (showing the complete title and name of composer according to the order of playing) must be included in the submission; in the video recording, the applicant must state the following introduction before the performances - full name and address of the school; the videotaped performances must be burned on CD in a format that can be easily viewed.

Music (other solo music instruments) applicants

A videotaped performance containing the following: from memory, do all minor and major scales until five (5) flats and sharps; perform one (1) etude; execute two contrasting movements of a sonata or concerto written for the instrument or two classical pieces - one (1) fast and one (1) slow; the performances must be videotaped inside any enclosed venue which is free from unwanted sounds; the video camera and the microphone must be 6 to 7 meters away from the applicant; a recording that has undergone electronic mixing or enhancements will not be accepted; the scores of repertoire performed (showing the complete title and name of composer according to the order of playing) must be included in the submission; in the video recording, the applicant must state the following introduction before the performances - full name and address of the school; the videotaped performances must be burned on CD in a format that can easily be viewed.

Reminders for Music Applicants
  • The applicant must understand his/her material well so it is advised that pieces appropriate for his/her age and experience are carefully studied for videotaping.
  • The applicant must ensure that the pieces to be performed in the video recording are announced and described before starting. The video recording area should be well-illuminated and free from visual and aural distractions.
  • The video recording should be of very clear quality and shot from a distance that covers the full body of the applicant for the entire duration of each performance.
  • Avoid changing camera angles often.
  • Label the CD and CD case with the full name of the applicant, full name and address of the school, and the art program for which the applicant is applying.
  • Include the title and description of all audition pieces and other information relative to the choice of piece in the CD.
  • All video tapes must be received together with the Application Form.
  • Prepare for a live performance on the day of the audition itself for the one's who will be accepted through video-taped audition. (for voice applicants)
