Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in Malaga, Spain.

His father is a teacher at the local art school and very early initiates him into an artistic apprenticeship.

At the age of fourteen he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona, and two years later he moved to the Academy of Madrid.

After a return to Barcelona, he goes to Paris in 1900: he will return there several times, until he finally settles there. From 1901 Picasso's style began to show original features.

The so-called blue period begins now and lasts until 1904.

The name derives from the fact that Picasso uses to paint in a monochromatic way, mainly using blue in all possible shades and shades.

The subjects are above all poor and marginalized.

Picasso preferably portrays them full length, in isolated positions and with a sad and sad air.

The result is images full of sadness, accentuated by the cold tones (blue, blue, gray) with which the paintings are made.

From 1905 to the end of 1906, Picasso lightened his palette, using shades of pink that were warmer than blue.

The so-called pink period begins now. Along with the color, the subjects also change.

Characters taken from the circus, acrobats and masks from the comedy of art are depicted.

 Among them, Arlecchino.

Picasso's cubist turning point came between 1906 and 1907, the years of the retrospective on Cézanne, which greatly influenced the painter.

Even Picasso in that period is interested in African sculpture: this is also part of the rediscovery of a primitive exoticism that characterizes European culture and art starting from Paul Gauguin Picasso likes to experiment, and so starting from these meetings he painted Les demoiselles d'Avignon in 1907, the starting point of his Cubist season.

In those years he is closely linked to George Braque.

The two artists worked closely together, to the point of producing works that are often indistinguishable from each other.

Picasso's notoriety reaches its peak here.

The cubist phase is a period of great experimentation: Picasso questions the very concept of artistic representation.

Fundamental moment of his evolution is given by the passage from analytic cubism to synthetic cubism.

Picasso appears increasingly interested in the simplification of form: the pure sign contains for him the structure of the thing and its conceptual recognizability. Picasso's cubist phase lasted about ten years.

In 1917, also following a trip to Italy, yet another distortion of his style takes place, and his painting returns to be more traditional.

The figures become solid and almost monumental: the painter returns to figurativeness, anticipating by a few years the phenomenon that from the mid-1920s will put an end to the Avant-gardes.

Later the painter approaches the languages of expressionism and surrealism, especially in sculpture, to which he is particularly dedicated.

In 1937 he participated in the World Exhibition in Paris, exhibiting the famous Guernica in the Spanish Pavilion, which is probably his most famous work and one of the most symbolic of the entire twentieth century.

In the years immediately following the Second World War he devoted himself to ceramics, while his pictorial work was characterized by works d'après: personal reinterpretations of famous paintings of the past such as Les meninas by Velazquez, Manet's breakfast on the grass or Le signorine in bank of the Seine de Courbet

He died in 1973 in Mougins (France)"
