Best processor possible for the Dell Latitude D630?

Hello! I have a Latitude D630 that I've spent a lot of time upgrading and servicing as a side project. I was wondering the upgrade path from where I am. I have a Core 2 Duo and would like to go further down the CPU route. It is a Socket P (478) Motherboard.

"Intel SLAZ3 Core 2 Extreme Processor CPU X9000 (6M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)

Look on eBay. Currently going for ~$45

*I have one in my d630 and it works great!"

"And, having just received an X9000 for my Dell D830 yesterday (and running fine so far), I wonder how one could use the unlocked CPU frequency multiplier (FID), esp. when using the notebook only under Linux…

Definitively, there’s no option foreseen in the Dell A17 bios to set the multiplier (well, it’s not a gaming notebook ;-)).

Did anyone try this?"

"This was the best site for loading Windows 10 21H1 64 bit version. Search this article.

How to Install Windows 10 on the Dell Latitude D630 – The Technologist.

The A19 Bios upgrade at the Technologist site loaded on my Dell D630 perfectly. The A19 upgrade on the Dell site did not work.

Follow the instructions all the way through at the Technologist site.

My Windows CD did not work in by D630. So I created a bootable USB flash drive and downloaded latest Windows 10 rev to my flash drive.

I upped the ram to 4gb before I loaded Windows. Original ram was only 1gb.

I put in a new Kingston 480gb SSD drive in the D630 before starting Windows installation. Took it like a champ. The USB bootable disk with Windows loaded up perfectly, and all drivers were installed automatically.

Next upgrade is Wifi card for 300mbs. The original is only 54mbs.

Probably put in a Duo Core 2 processor in the future which would be an Intel Extreme X9000, which others have proven out already.

The main bottleneck though is the 54mbs wifi card. For about $ 8.00 I have the 300mbs coming in.

With original processor of 1.7 mhz it plays videos and all just fine.

This upgrade totaled me about $ 120.00 for a nice laptop. The laptop was given to me from one that bought a new one for about $ 1,400."

July 2021, the X9000 is now running about $100 on E-bay. Looking for a P socket (478 pins), 800 MHz CPU, 6M cache, (“2.6/6/800 p socket, dual core”) the T9300 has 2.5/6/800 P socket is about half the price, but I read somewhere that it required a revised bios at startup - no experience here. The T9500 2.6/6/800 is also about $50. The X9000 is still the best CPU for the D630 it appears, but looking. The 800 MHz was basically phased out. I’m no expert - just learning along the way. Older models are also available with a smaller cache.
