Booting From VIA VT6421A Based PCI SATA Card

I bought a VIA VT6421A based SATA card for an 845 chipset based motherboard. The card is working – I can access the SATA HDD from Windows/Linux.

"known bug in the early VIA SATA bioses. (642x, motherboard 8237 controllers). It doesn't start SATA-3 disks (especially SSDs). It's supposed to start SATA-2 disks (i've got an old Seagate 160G from the early 2000s) and it's visible in the bios with and without the jumper strapping it to SATA1 on two different 8237 via systems (linux on one, windows on the other)

In windows, I'm able to see and format the SSD on a VT6421a controller. I've never got the linux driver to wake up the SSD on either MB SATA-1 via controllers, or the raid 642x controllers."
