Can the Original Watch's insides be upgraded to Series 1 or 2?

Can the Original Watch's insides be upgraded to Series 1 or 2?

If I buy a broken display Apple Watch can I use the display, battery and case from my original Series 0 watch with the circuit boards of that more advanced watch? What are people doing with their old Gold watches?
