Fresh installation of XP hangs after MUP.SYS I have a system that has been running as a Linux box for the last few months. Originally, it's OS was Windows XP Media Center Edition.

"I had exactly the same error two weeks ago, and turns out the HDD I used had bad sectors on it, it's worth a look if this is your problem as well.

You can try and fix the bad sectors; Boot a Win98 boot disk to get into a DOS command prompt and run:

chkdsk c: /f /v
