"If it is unencrypted you can remove the casing and remove the controller card that is attached to the hard drive. If the issue is the controller card and you have a PC with an available spot to plug in the drive you can do that and it will appear as a new drive with your data. At that point get another external drive and copy the data to that.

The reason it has to be unencrypted for this to work is because the controller card’s encryption protocol is on one of its chips.

Q. Why not just swap the drive with a new myBook of the same model?

A. The encryption chip is different on each myBook for security."

"The problem with data recovery on these is the WD Ware USB bridge encrypts the drive, even *if* you didn’t enable the SW encryption - they all have encryption now, in hardware. It’s been like this since ~2010/11 with WD.

In order to recover the data you will need to repair this PCB, or find another drive with the same PCB of the same model to swap it over which is known good, to even have a chance."
