"Hi Amit,

I went through the complete post but i am not satisfied with both the answers because of that it is difficult for a common user they can't open the HDD and change the plotter or PCB. If you still suffering the same situation then please don't hit & try on the HDD else you might lose data permanently. Please consult any Data Recovery Expert they will guide you step by step."

"I'm afraid that the drive will probably need to go to a data recovery service.

If it isn't detected when you plug it it, the chances are that the data is ok, but something in the circuit board has failed.

Most of these places have a stock of old drives. The first thing they will try is simply replacing the circuit board on the underside of the device. If you could find another drive of EXACTLY the same make and model, you could try that yourself - it's a relatively simple task. You simply unscrew the board, remove the ribbon cable, and reconnect the new one. Try searching the net for the exact make and model.

Be careful though, as there can be different revisions within the same model - you must make sure that the revision number is the same as well.

It's possible to transplant platters, but trust me - it is an incredibly tricky and difficult job, for which you would to do a lot of research and also special tools to keep the heads spaced apart. Without this, the job is practically impossible, and on a first attempt, I guarantee that anyone will destroy the drive completely.

Transplanted platters don't last long, either - maybe long enough to recover the data, but it's not a permanent solution. I don't recommend doing this at all!"

"What exactly was the failure? dead, not spinning, clicking, not detected by BIOS or OS?

If the HDD has any of the above issues, you have a fault which you will not be able to fix, it will not be a DIY job I am afraid.

Please do not change the PCB, this will not work, also do not open the hard drive.

Please reply."

"This is bit techi to do this but still by following the instruction you can achieve your purpose.

First you need to turn over your laptop and your will see like 2 or 3 different covers with screws. Check which screw has a hard drive icon. Just open the screw and use screw drivers to open your hard drive further.

Once your detach it the check if its IDE or SATA.

After this you need to get a SATA to USB or IDE to USB converter. You can order it online for few bucks or can also get it from some hardware shop. Once you get this converter then attache it with connector and then further with your PC via USB. In this way you would be able to manually back up all your data from all folders one by one."
