Why do I not get a dial tone?

"I frequently find one of my Vtech handset unable to make connection with the base station. I would love to find a way to solve that problem permanently. I can only temporarily correct the issue by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. This is annoying and will eventually result in the destruction of the small connector which is not designed for frequent disconnection.
