Why is the camera not turning on when I am shorting the batteries?

I am really sorry if this is a stupid question, but i am just not able to get an answer for this. the closing lid of camera is broken, so i thought that if i connect the positive and negative sides of two cells with a copper wire, the camera should turn on because the circuit will be complete, am i missing something?

"Hi,

Are you pressing down the batteries at the same time as connecting them together and also ensuring that the lid switch (if applicable) is operated?

Usually with a camera battery compartment cover, it not only provides the electrical connection between the ends of the batteries, (in the case of AA cells) but it also exerts downward pressure to ensure that the other ends of the batteries are in good contact with the camera's power terminals. Some covers also operate a micro switch, when closed, which no doubt sends a signal to the motherboard that all is correct. You do not state the model number of your camera so I cannot verify that your model has a battery cover switch or not."
