Why does my KitchenAide Elite mixer not stay off when plugged in?

Why does my KitchenAide Elite mixer not stay off when plugged in? My KitchenAide Elite stand mixer will not stay off when the dial is at 0. It will stop for only about 1 minute and then go at almost full speed. The only way to keep it off is to keep it unplugged.
