Why is my laser pointer suddenly not working?

Why is my laser pointer suddenly not working?

My laser pointer has brand new batteries, but refuses to come on at all now. I have checked to make sure the batteries were in right. The laser pointer is several years old, but it was my dads so I would really like to get it working again if possible.
