Break lights only work in park will not work in any gear

Break lights only work in park will not work in any gear Have a 1997 chevy c2500 4x4 just changed the break light switch i now have break lights but only in park as soon as truck is put into gear there gone. Fuse fine bulbs fine just replaced break switch ...what did i miss??
