Do you need to buy directly from apple for apple care?

I got AirPods from Christmas which were bought from Walmart. Both headphones are quiet but the right was is very low. Apples website doesn’t recognize the purchase date as it wasn’t bought directly from them. I tried blowing, resetting and gently cleaning them but nothing has worked
