What is the full model number of the washer?
When you say that “… hose attached to the knob to select load size had come undone” presumably you mean the pressure switch hose. This is used to get the pressure switch to operate to stop the washer from continuing to fill when the correct water level has been reached.
If you checked that the hose is OK (no splits or cracks, connected OK at both ends) then perhaps the pressure switch - example only has gone faulty.
To find the correct pressure switch for your model, search on the site in the link (model number only) or online, (insert full model number of washer) parts to get results for suppliers."
