Ice Maker Door Does Not Open

Ice Maker Door Does Not Open The ice maker door of our GE Profile Refrigerator opens only about one inch. It seems to be stuck. How do I gain access to the interior?

It's frozen shut probably due to a bad icemaker seal or faulty inlet valve. Thawing the ice is the only way to remove it without damage. Once removed, follow the ice. Did it start forming at the bottom of the ice maker or above the icemaker at the fill tube? If ice is inside the fill tube replace the water inlet valve. If ice formed under the ice maker replace the icemaker. I usually replace both parts since they are water related and work together. No one likes a flooded kitchen.

"One thing it could be is that there is some sort of latch preventing it from opening. Look around the top and edges for an object stopping it from opening. You can also consult your manual on how to open it up or remove it completely so it can thaw out if it's frozen shut. But first, you should look for some latch or an object it gets stuck on.

Hope this helps and good luck fixing!"

Just did a repair on a GE Profile that was growing huge amounts of ice. The flap where ice is dispensed was stuck open. I removed the touch pad control on the freezer door which revealed 4 screws. I removed these and when this unit came out the problem was obvious: the ice door solenoid was completely rusted and unable to move. Although a replacement was $35 I opted to remove the rusty unit, clean it thoroughly, paint it to inhibit future rust and reinstall. You can test the solenoid after installing it again before covering it up with the other parts: plug the refrigerator in and manually push the lever that is normally pushed by the glass you are filling.

If the ice maker flap is open the ice maker will simply not work. Plain and simple. The flap for ice reservoir has to be shut. Give it a good slam( not too hard because you don’t obviously want to break it).
