Scratched iPod photo front, replace the case or display?

Scratched iPod photo front, replace the case or display?
My ipod photo is terribly scratched. Since I need to replace the battery I thought I'd replace the scratched display while I had the ipod open, however I can't tell if the case has a plastic window over the display or if the case has an open window where the display is exposed. Do I replace the case or the display for a scratch free screen?
