The display window on my GE JVM1790SK01 is too dim to read it

The display window on my GE JVM1790SK01 is too dim to read it

In order to see the wording on the panel, I have to turn off the kitchen lights completely to even read the words. Very frustrating, but I’d like to find out if there is an easy fix before I remove it and throw in the dumpster. This model is ten years old and no longer in production.
