Why do I only have a shifting problem when in drive with overdrive on

Why do I only have a shifting problem when in drive with overdrive on I have been having a shifting problem with my trans when in drive with overdrive on, when i’m in drive without overdrive i have 0 problems, when my TH700R4 gos to switch gears it is grinding, vibrating and no longer accelerating. i have no idea why this only happens when in overdrive but not in basic drive.
