Why does my jeep die in reverse but not in other gears

Why does my jeep die in reverse but not in other gears I have a 1996 jeep grand Cherokee it starts up idles rough but when we go to put it in reverse it just does like we are turning the key off when it's still in the on position any thoughts on what could be the culprit or he problem
