Why does steam come out the side of the hood

Why does steam come out the side of the hood After coming off the highway at a stop when the engine temp gets to about halfway sometimes I will hear this screeching(like a bad bearing) and then a lil steam comes out the left side of the hood. Its an 89 7.3 idi non-turbo, never overheats and no other problems.
