Why does the vehicle want to die when not in neutral?

Why does the vehicle want to die when not in neutral? Hi, I have a 1991 ford club wagon. It drives great but every time I slow down and come to a stop, it will will die unless i give it some gas and put it in neutral. Any reason why this happens?
