Why doesn't my device allow me to raise the volume above a limit?

Yesterday night, when I went to bed, I turned off my speaker and everything was working well. When I woke up this morning and wanted to listen to some music during my breakfast, my charge 3 started making an awfully weird noise whenever I tried to raise the volume (above around 30% of max volume) on the membrane buttons. However, if I try to raise the volume on the cellphone, there is no problem whatsoever. Thought maybe it was a setting I had triggered or something along those lines, but even with the JBL apps and all, nothing seems to fix this.
