Why won't my machine move into the spin cycle?

Why won't my machine move into the spin cycle?

My washing machine will agitate until about 2 minutes past the 6 minute mark, then go dead. The timer sound also stops at this point. For a little while, we could push on/ sit on the lid and it would restart, but no longer.
