Won't Drain or Spin but Dial goes to end of cycle

My washer will stop full of water and won't spin, drain or go through the rinse. The dial will be at the end of the cycle as if it had finished. For a while we were able to hit the top of the washer and it would advance to the next job (drain or spin) and complete the cycle. Now we have to manually turn the dial back to get it to spin, drain and go though the rinse cycle. We have to do this several times to complete the wash cycle.
