Wont shift into drive but has reverse

Wont shift into drive but has reverse My 95 neon started not upshifting then started shifting into neutral and not going back into drive until i shut the engine off and started it again then it would go into drive. Now it only has reverse and only occasionally after sitting awhile i can start it up and drive for just a couple of minutes before it just stops working.
