Fair or unfair the lottery?

because the lottery shouldn't be done at all for it waste too many lives for the Old people's belief of sacrificing one's life makes the year bountiful. If you think of it sarcastically, Why don't the believers sacrifice themselves instead of bugging somebody who didn't believe that tradition? Those old peoplle should be the ones to be sacrificed for they've lived long enough instead of Tessie who's just an adult with kids to raise.
