"Let 5x - number of cards Daniel had at first.
6x - number of cards Sam had

Sam gave 1/3 of his cards
5x + (1/3)6x = 42
5x + 2x = 42
7x = 42
x = 6

Therefore, 5x = 5(6) = 30 is the number of cards Daniel had at first while Sam has 36. Sam gave 1/3 of his cards which is 12 to Daniel. Daniel has 42 cards now.

The answer to the question is 30 cards.

I hope I got it right."
