"100 / 40 = 2 remainder 20
40 : 2 gallons = 20 : n gallons
2(20)=40n
40=40n
1 gallon=n
2 gallons + 1 gallon = 3 gallons
therefore, 3 gallons of paint are needed to paint a wall with an area of 100 sq metres.
