"Let x = length of the highway route in miles

      x - 3 = length of the back roads in miles

5 minutes (1hr/60 minutes) = 1/12 hr

(x/45miles/hr) =  [(x - 3)/36miles/hr] - 1/12

               36x = 45x - 135 - 135

                -9x = -270

                    x = 30 miles             The highway route is 30 miles long

30 - 3 = 27 miles                           and the back road is 27 miles long"
