Why a person trying to push a stalled automobile must lend forward to get the best result?

This happens because of the inertia of the body. The body is not completely attached with the car. When a car stops, the body wants to continue moving itself - wants to remain in the previous state of motion. This follows directly from Newton's first Law of motion.
