The constellation lies in the southern sky and represents the archer.
It is usually depicted as a centaur holding a bow and arrow and is also associated with Crotus, the satyr who kept company of the Muses on Mount Helicon. The centaur is depicted as aiming an arrow toward the heart of the neighbouring constellation Scorpio, represented by the red supergiant star Antares.
It houses the Arches Cluster, the Quintuplet Cluster with the luminous Pistol Star, the Galactic centre, the radio source Sagittarius A, as well as the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy, the Sagittarius Dwarf Irregular Galaxy, Barnard’s Galaxy, the Bubble Nebula, the Sagittarius Star Cloud the Omega Nebula, Messier 18, the Lagoon Nebula, and the Trifid Nebula.
It is the 15th largest constellation and occupies an area of about 245 square degrees. It lies in SQ4, the fourth quadrant of the southern hemisphere.
Sagittarius belongs to the Zodiac family, along with Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Capricornus, Aquarius and Pisces.
