It is a constellation that lies in the southern sky and is associated with the story of Orion in Greek mythology.
It is usually identified with the scorpion that killed Orion, the mythical hunter. It is one of the oldest constellations known. About 5,000 years ago, the Sumerians called it GIR-TAB, or “the scorpion,”. It is located near the centre of the Milky Way.
Scorpius houses the bright stars Antares and Shaula, the Butterfly Cluster, the Ptolemy Cluster, Cat’s Paw Nebula, the Butterfly Nebula, and the War and Peace Nebula.
It is the 33rd largest constellation and occupies an area of about 497 square degrees. It lies in SQ3, the third quadrant of the southern hemisphere.
Scorpius belongs to the Zodiac family, along with Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, Capricornus, Aquarius and Pisces.
