Araw ng Kagitingan 2012

Pursuant to Executive Order No. 203, s. 1987 entitled "Declaring April 9 of Every Year as Araw Ng Kagitingan" and Presidential Proclamation No. 466, s. 1989 entitled "Declaring the period of April 5-11 of every year as Philippine Veterans Week," all government agencies including government-owned and controlled corporations, non-government organizations, private associations and institutions, and individuals are enjoined to assist, cooperate, and participate in this historic commemoration. The theme of this year's celebration is "Beterano: Tagasulong ng Tunay at Walang Humpay na Pagbab ago. "
The commemoration aims to promote, preserve, and memorialize the principles, ideals and deeds of the war veterans as a means to enhance patriotism and love of country, especially among the youth.

The Department of Education (DepEd), being a member of the National Steering Committee (NSC), and Co-Chair of the Technical Working Committee (TWC) encourages all DepEd regional, division, school officials, and students to attend and participate in all the lined-up activities of this year's celebration. Enclosure No. 1 contains the Program of Activities.

One of the highlights of the commemoration is the conduct of the following competitions by DepEd in coordination with the Department of National Defense (DND) through the NSC and TWC:
  1. 4th National Creative Painting Contest. This is open to high school students enrolled in public and private secondary schools nationwide. Deadline for the submission of entries is on March 28, 2011. Enclosure No. 2 contains the Creative Painting Contest Guidelines;
  2. NCR-wide WWII History Quiz Competition. This is open to all high school students in the National Capital Region (NCR). Enclosure No. 3 provides the NCR-wide WWII History Quiz Mechanics; and
  3. Central Office Employees WWII History Quiz Competition. This is open to all employees of the Central Office (permanent, casual, contract of service). Enclosure No. 3 enumerates the Guidelines and Mechanics of the Contest.
The judging of the National Creative Painting Contest will be held on March 30, 2012, 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at the Lobby of Rizal Bldg., DepEd Complex, Meralco Avenue, Pasig City while the NCR-wide contest will be held at the Bureau of Secondary Education (BSE) Conference Room, 3rd Floor, Bonifacio Bldg., at 9:00 a.m. (students) and 2:00 p.m. (Central Office employees), respectively.

The Araw Ng Kagitingan commemorative rites will be replicated in different regions. The DepEd Regional Directors (RDs) and the Schools Division/City Superintendents (SDSs) shall represent the Secretary and shall ensure the attendance of the regional, division, and school officials, teachers, and students/pupils during the said occasion in the following areas:
  1. Region I - Batac, Ilocos Norte;
  2. Region II - Province of Isabela;
  3. Region III - Province of Pampanga
  4. Region IV - City of Tagaytay;
  5. Region V - Province of Albay;
  6. Region VI - IIoilo City;
  7. Region VII - Cebu City;
  8. Region VIII - Province of Leyte;
  9. Region IX - Zamboanga City;
  10. Region XII - Cotabato City;
  11. Caraga - Butuan City;
  12. CAR - Baguio City; and
  13. ARMM - Iligan City.
Travel expenses (transportation and per diem) of the winners and coaches or teacher chaperones shall be charged to local funds while board and lodging of the winners and their coaches or chaperones, cash prizes, medals, and trophies shall be charged to the TWC funds. Expenses for the supplies and materials, meals and snacks, documentation and communication, TEV's and honoraria of the judges and the Task Force, and other miscellaneous and operational expenses shall be charged to OSec funds subject to the usual accounting and auditing rules and regulations.
