What should I do when I get the "very low battery" message?

What should I do when I get the "very low battery" message? I have replaced the hard drive in my 30GB iPod Classic. The backlight will not light, and all I can see is either the Apple logo or the message: "Please wait. Very low battery." ANSWERS:
