Why do I have 1st &reverse, and not 2nd &3rd in my TH-350

Why do I have 1st &reverse, and not 2nd &3rd in my TH-350 When i start my truck i hear a whine coming from the transmission. I've got a solid reverse and first, but as soon as i try to shift by hand no 2nd or 3rd gear. Any Insight is
