Washer makes very loud noise during spin cycle

My washer makes a very loud noise during the spin cycle (it does not make the load noise during any other cycles). The load is balanced and the drum is not wobbling side to side.

"Dan,

If your Kenmore 110 Series Washing Machine is making strange noises, see the Kenmore 110 Series Washing Machine Makes Unusual Noises problem page for possible causes and solutions.

Please give us the model number of your machine and we'll get you to the correct parts. An auto parts place is not going to have what you need.

If the washer is making a loud noise in the spin cycle, the clutch assembly might be worn out. The clutch assembly makes the connection between the transmission and the inner tub. It is designed to allow the tub to get up to the proper spin speed gradually. As the clutch wears out it may become loud during spin or just after the spin cycle finishes. The clutch is not repairable, if it is loud or not working properly it will need to be replaced.

This is probably the part you need: http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/C..."

My 15 year old Kenmore Elite HE3t was making a knocking noise during the spin cycle. So I took the lower front panel off (three screws) and taped down the safety switch on the right (Idiots, please don’t do this). When I ran the machine and got the knocking sound during the spin cycle, I pushed (with a stick of wood) on the outer tub (which does not spin), and the knock went away completely. I didn’t have to push hard. I presume that there is backlash (looseness) in one of the tub supports, or perhaps the tub is hitting the frame somewhere. Whatever, it’s been stable for a number of years now. So to fix it, I put a small spring from the top of the left front damper to an existing hole in the cabinet front. That solved the problem. The spring keeps the backlash from banging. Been working fine for a month now. I didn’t even have to move the machine to fix it.

Dan - thanks for information.  My Kenmore Elite Oasis (model #110.27042602) has gotten much louder during the spin cycle.  Seems to be spinning fast and gradually going from slower to faster spin.  Clothes may be slightly more damp ... just much louder.  Potential Clutch Assembly issue?  Correct part #?  Also saw comments on Drum bearing and Seal ... possibly issue ... way to test?  Correct part #?  Both of these DIY repairs for folks handy at DIY things?  Instructions with parts?  Or on the Repair Clinic web site?  Due to balance issue, I replaced the suspension damper springs/rods 6/18 and took care of that issue.  Thanks - Doug

"I changed the clutch. The noise has gotten progressively louder. Almost metal on metal. As it spins, every time the tub reaches the same point in the spin, is makes a louder noise. When it is off, I can spin the tub by hand and it spins freely with no noise or resistance. I do not think it is the tub bearing. Transmission?
