Why is my agitator skipping as it washes

When my washers is in wash cycle the agitator skips or stops briefly and then continues washing?

"Most like cause is worn agitator dogs. An Easy and inexpensive fix.

Cause 1

Agitator Repair Kit

If the washer won't agitate, replacing the agitator repair kit may solve the problem. The kit contains the agitator components that are most likely to wear out and/or fail. If any of the parts are worn out, stripped, or damaged, replace the kit.

Here is a diagram of what it looks like.

I had a similar issue mine stopped completely, underneath the head of the agitator there are toothed cams the catch and moved the agitator in one direction. They are either worn out or gummed up with detergent. It is not a hard job to replace or clean them if needed. Remove the fabric softener dispenser from the top of the agitator the pry the cover up that says triple action fabric care (there is a small notch on the side). Then you will see the cam assembly. To remove and replace you will need a long 1/2" socket extension which will fit into the square detent, loosen and remove the assembly. Under the white part you will see the cams presses in they should swing easily if the teeth are worn or the cam is broken they need to be replaced.
