TESDA to represent in 2012 ASEAN Skills Competition in Indonesia

30 March 2012 - The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is intensively prepping its specialists all over the country to represent the Philippines in the 2012 ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) in Indonesia in November.
TESDA has wrapped up the regional and national skills competitions, and will announce on April 1 the final list of competitors who will be the country's representatives to the skills challenge.

The Philippines failed to join the ASC in the last three years, but in June last year, TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva directed the TESDA field offices to prepare hard for the country’s re-entry in the biennial skills challenge.

"The Filipino skilled workers are world-class. We should not pass up on this opportunity through the ASEAN Skills Competition to show it off the competence of our skilled workers,” Villanueva said.

He said the competition will also help drumbeat public interest in technical vocational education and promote it to various sectors as something worthy of their support.

"Competition such as this also fosters closer cooperation between TESDA and its stakeholders as we will all be rooting for one Philippine team,” he added.

For the November competition, TESDA will be sending two representatives for each of the 18 trade areas namely: IT Software Application, Information Network Cabling, Web Design, Electrical Installation Technology, Fashion Design, Electronics, Cooking, Mechanical Engineering CAD, Welding, Automotive, Refrigeration, Mechatronics, Beauty and Therapy, Wall and Floor Tiling, Restaurant Services, Graphic Design, Plumbing and Heating and Hairdressing.

The specialists were earlier chosen through skills competitions conducted at various levels from provincial, regional and national from March 26 to March 28.

They will undergo stringent preparation that includes physical development, skills and knowledge enhancement, industry immersion, psychological preparation and value formation.

The ASC is the regional level skill competition that would lead to the International Youth Skills Olympics. Among the countries who will participate in the ASC are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been holding the ASC on a bi-annual basis since 1995.
