Can I tether my iPhone to my iPad?

Hi! I'm wondering if I can tether the 3G on my iPhone to my iPad, so I don't have to pay AT&T yet another $29/month for the iPad?

No one will know yet, it's not shipping yet, so things may change. You'll just have to wait and see.

All the 3G iPads come unlocked so while AT&T are Apple's preferred carrier, there's nothing to stop you finding a better contract or even a Pay as you Go SIM.

"since we're all just speculating here, I'll add my educated guess :)

the original question was about tethering an iPhone to an iPad - note that the iPad runs iPhone OS (now, v3.2), NOT Mac OS X. so what you're asking is if you can tether two iPhone OS devices together. this is not supported in the current iPhone OS, i.e. you can't currently tether an iPhone to another iPhone

it would not be a simple matter of plugging them in together (no such 30pin to 30pin dock cable exists anyhow) although you could argue there's still Bluetooth possibility. but either way it would need to be supported in iPhone OS that the iPad can receive its internet connection via a 2nd tethered iPhone OS device. I'm guessing it won't be supported as such."

The only way to tether an iPhone is if you jailbreak it (at least on At&t) then you run into the issue of connecting it to the iPad, which would be done over bluetooth, or a custom 30-Pin to 30-Pin dock cable. This would also require a jailbroken iPad (which doesn't even exist yet) so the dev teams can't even start since you can't get an iPad, then you would need an app in the iPad to receive the signal from the iPhone, and use it for internet. Overall, it would be a pain to set up, but theoretically might be possible in the future once iPad jailbreak is possible (yet apple has taken all possible measures to prevent this) and someone has taken the time do develop an application to do this.
