Why does my Sony Handycam say the Hard Drive can't be detected?

Try restarting the Handycam. If that does not work then the hard drive may need to be formatted. Try referring to the troubleshooting page. If formatting the drive does not work then the hard drive should be replaced. Follow this guide.
