Why does my external hard drive keep making this weird noise when it is plugged in either my laptop or PC, both are Windows.

"It sounds like part of the drive has failed. Either the bearings in the motor, the heads crashed, or such.

Does the weird noise sound like one or a combination of these?:GrindingChirpingRattlingScreechingLoud vibration

If so, it’s probably failed. If the data is worth sending the drive for recovery, do take note that the more you attempt to use it the less likely anyone can recover the data."

"It does sound like the drive has failed. If you need the data on it you’ll need to send the drive into a data recovery service. Hopefully they can recover it.

If you are moving your drive around you might want to look at getting a SSD drive as they are more rugged. HDD’s don’t like being moved while they are running."
