Why won't the Flash work?

Why won't the Flash work?

I have a PowerShot SX160 IS. The Flash is not working. When I try to take a picture with the flash option the camera will not snap picture. I manually opened the Flash and attempted to take a picture but the same thing happened. The camera will still take a picture but no flash.
