Win XP Pro fails to recognize external drives

Win XP Pro fails to recognize external drives

Win XP Pro (w/SP3) had previously recognized my external (USB)hard drives, but no longer does so. It has no difficulty with flash drives - only mechanical ones. What gives? Computer senility?
