Engine turns over and engages but will not move My 1988 Yamaha gas powered golf cart will turn over but it will not engage in the gears reverse or forward

Kimberley Pruitt you did not give us the complete model number. Your cart is most certainly one that has a drive belt over a centrifugal adjusting pulley system. Check to make sure that the belt is still on. Procedure for checking it should be similar to this Yamaha Model:
